The Mississippi Valley Hosta Society is organized exclusively as a nonprofit educational society to promote knowledge and love of Hostas, to encourage the development of new and improved varieties and to promote wider use and appreciation of Hostas.
Regular meetings of the MVHS are usually held at the Riverdale Fire Station across from Alcoa on Highway 67 east of Bettendorf, Iowa. Notice and time of meetings are printed in the Newsletter “Hosta Happenings” and posted on this web site. Eight to 10 issues of this informative newsletter are included in your membership. The Society plans programs featuring guest speakers of national repute, bus trips to various gardens and nurseries, as well as other educational and fun activities. The Annual Christmas Party is a gala affair.
WHAT THE SOCIETY HAS DONE FOR THE COMMUNITY AND
WHAT FUTURE PLANS INCLUDE
The MVHS holds an annual plant sale in the Spring open to the public. Contributions from the proceeds of this sale have been made to a number of local groups – the Dubuque Arboretum to help finance their shade house, Quad Cities Botanical Center in Rock Island IL, Bettendorf Family Museum, and the Muscatine Arboretum. The MVHS also created, planted, and maintains the Hosta Glade at Vander Veer Botanical Park in Davenport, which is a designated AHS National Display Garden.
Every member is encouraged to promote the use of the Genus Hosta in landscaping for the home, for parks, and business establishments. The MVHS is a place to find friends to share and gain knowledge about growing Hostas.
